Self-protection is not just learning how to fight

The primary goal during a self-protection event is to avoid or to safely escape the situation, not to engage in a brawl with potentially serious consequences.

The term ‘self-defense’ conjures images of physical confrontations whereby an attacker is rendered harmless through physical means. While this is certainly one dimension of self-protection, it is only one part of a much broader topic. Self-protection is an overarching concept that includes situational awareness, a projection of confidence, verbal and physical de-escalation and if necessary, use of force to address a threat.

Can-Ryu Jiu-Jitsu is not about being able to spar a three minute round with your opponent or to grapple until somebody is tapped-out. In a self-protection event, the longer you’re involved, the higher the probability of serious repercussions for yourself and/or your assailant(s). An assaulter doesn’t typically negotiate the rules of engagement ahead of time. There are no rules, only results.

Section 34 of the Canadian Criminal Code defines the law in Canada with respect to the use or threat of force in the defense of oneself or another person. Regardless of what physical actions or martial arts system a person chooses to employ in defense of themselves, these actions will be measured against the same legal standard.

Students of Can-Ryu Jiu-Jitsu receive well-rounded instruction in strikes, kicks, blocks, joint-locks, throws & takedowns, ground defense and control techniques. Exploration of this toolbox provides a solid foundation in self-protection while also facilitating discovery of a variety of martial art disciplines that one can spend a lifetime studying.
